Cincinnati’s Future: Form-Based Building Codes

Today is the first day of the city-wide charrette for Cincinnati’s future building codes. They will be form-based rather than use-based, meaning that the city will be regulating the physical character of the neighborhood rather than the business types that are allowed in the neighborhood.

My wife and I attended this afternoon’s orientation session. The process was incredibly accessible. (more…)

Thank You, Congratulations, and Next Steps

Thank you and congratulations.

Thank you for your awesome support in this campaign. Running for office was much less intimidating than I expected, and it was exclusively because of the strong support that I got from the deeply engaged people on this site and across our social media.

Congratulations on having built a grassroots electoral movement that we can use year after year to help put progressives in office. I congratulate you, because I did little more than look approachable and write down some things that you already believed. It’s you who did the important work of mobilizing voters to stand with the most progressive candidate.

It’s taken us awhile to compose this note because we needed some time to decide what to do with all your amazing momentum. We knew we didn’t want to let it just dissipate, but we needed to put the proper plans in motion to channel all your energy in a meaningful way after the primary.

NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Endorses Luke Brockmeier

Dear Friends,

I’m honored to be endorsed by NARAL Ohio in my race for the Ohio Statehouse. (I hope you’ll read the full endorsement below.)

We are in the midst of a nationwide War on Women.  A vocal group of bullies has convinced elected officials at every level that women don’t deserve access to cancer screenings, birth control, or abortion care.  I am the only candidate in this primary who will stand up to these bullies and protect a woman’s right to choose when and with whom she starts a family.

Brockmeier Mailer Tells East Side Democrats He’s Pro-Choice

CINCINNATI (TDB) — The three-candidate contest for the Democratic nomination for Ohio’s 31st District House seat — the post now held by Denise Driehaus — is heating up dramatically. Over the weekend, newcomer Luke Brockmeier flooded mailboxes with a slick, postcard-sized flier that proclaims himself the only “true” Democrat running. There’s a lot of blue ink on the card, a sure symbol that he’s putting plenty of space between himself and those red Republicans who now control the legislature in Columbus. Driehaus didn’t put any distance between herself and House Republicans earlier this year when she signed on as the only Democrat to co-sponsor HB 78, which became a law sharply restricting late-term abortions in Ohio. There were 49 GOP cosponsors.   (more…)

Luke Brockmeier Demands an End to the Attacks on Women’s Health

Last week, the Susan G. Komen Foundation announced a decision to sever ties with Planned Parenthood.  This unfortunate decision–a result of years of bullying from anti-choice extremists–prompted an immediate backlash from sane people everywhere, finally resulting in an apparent reversal on the part of Komen.
There are two reasons that these events are such a telling microcosm. (more…)

Cincinnati Beacon: Brunner: Luke Brockmeier “the strongest candidate” in the 31st district primary race

February 7, 2011
Justin Jeffre
Cincinnati Beacon

Luke Brockmeier picked up a major endorsement from former Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. He’s a new candidate for the newly created liberal leaning district and he’s running against two conservative Blue Dogs. This endorsement gives him good momentum after his strong performance in Sunday’s debate on Newsmakers. As Dan Hurly noted, whoever wins the March 6th primary will surely win the general election.

The Enquirer reports that,

“Luke Brockmeier stands out among all the other candidates in the race – Luke Brockmeier is the only pro-choice candidate in this Democratic primary,” Brunner wrote in an e-mail blast to supporters Tuesday. “His solidly progressive views on equality and women’s issues make him the strongest candidate in the race.”

Brockmeier is running against two anti-choice Democrats, State Rep. Denise Driehaus from Price hill (she recently moved to Clifton heights to be in the new district) and Terry Tranter is from Amberley Village. Tranter was in the House 20 years ago and sounds very conservative.

Tranter’s endorsed by Ohio Right to Life and Driehaus is endorsed by the conservative coporate owned Ohio Democratic Party. The Hamilton County Democrats have decided to let primary voters decide who the candidate will be.

The Enquirer goes on to report.

The Republicans in the legislature drew a district that is nearly 70 percent Democrtic and includes Madisonville, Oakley, Hyde Park, Clifton, Clifton Heights, Walnut Hills, Evanston, Mt. Auburn, Northside, Silverton, Norwood and St. Bernard.

The race is really heating up this winter and will be interesting to watch. Can Brockmeier — who was largely seen as an underdog –beat these two old Blue Dogs? In this new progressive district his chances are looking better every day.

It’s not very often I can give an endorsement to a candidate on more than just political terms, so when I have the opportunity to do so I feel it’s important to take that opportunity.

The newly-drawn 31st District of the Ohio House of Representatives contains a good chunk of the center of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. (more…)

I’m ecstatic to have received the endorsement of former Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.  I’m grateful to have the support of a prominent state-level Democrat, and I’m excited to get the backing of the only candidate to win this specific district in a competitive Democratic primary – and I’m jubilant to be endorsed by one of my heroes. I’m Proud to Introduce My Family

Supporters of my opponent have been attacking me for getting campaign support from my family. Specifically, for a $7,500 donation from a tiny town called Snyder, Texas — my wife’s hometown.

But if we’re going to discuss my family, let’s really discuss my family.

I’d like you to meet them. (more…)

Labor unions are the key to Ohio’s economic success

There are two great generational challenges facing Ohio’s economic future.

The first is our unemployment situation.  Extended weakness in the labor market, of the sort we’ve experienced since the Bush collapse, has a lifelong toll on the quality of life for the unemployed, as well as those who are earning less because of greater competition in the workforce.  Because of federal Republican obstructionism and misguided austerity measures at the state level, Ohioans will face lower wages for decades to come. The political problem of fracking

Last night I went to the Southwest Ohio No Frack Forum, a coalition event to educate and mobilize our community as regards fracking in our state.

There are two types of fracking, as mentioned in my prior post:  horizontal fracking, to extract natural gas (the jobs from which last 2-5 years), which damages local geology; and injection wells, wherein the byproducts of horizontal fracking are buried beneath the watershed.

Both are largely unregulated; both have only fleeting economic benefits, and permanent public health risks; and neither has any benefit of any sort for Cincinnati. (more…)

CityBeat – Luck of the (Re)Draw: Three Democrats battle for the new 31st Ohio House District

Fascinating, diverse, progressive — those are just a handful of words that are being used to describe the new 31st Ohio House District.

Consisting of Amberley Village, Clifton, Clifton Heights, Evanston, Madisonville, Hyde Park, Northside, Oakley, Silverton, St. Bernard and Walnut Hills, the district contains many walks of life, including a healthy liberal population.

There is no doubt that the area will need a special representative, and in the contested Democratic primary, each of the three very different candidates believes he or she is the right fit. (more…)
